When you use any search engine or directory to conduct a search there are two ways a website can wind up in the results.

A website conducting a PPC campaign is paying every
time person clicks on their sponsored links. These pay per clicks
can range anywhere from a few pennies to several dollars per
click. For a business starting out this is sometimes the only way to
deliver qualified traffic to the website until the Organic listings
take hold.
Organic Listings are those which appear directly below the sponsored links. They cost the site owner nothing for each click but it is difficult to get into the organic listings. Organic listings are those determined by the search engine to be relevant to the query conducted.
In order to be listed in the organics a site must be optimized, have a strong inbound link count and present very relevant content for its visitors. Once these criteria have been met a site will rise naturally in the search results as long as the site continues to grow and receive inbound links.
