Search Engines & Optimization
Search Engines are giant databases
of website content. Think of
them as directories where one can search for a
particular phrase or term and have a set of specific
results returned and ordered by relevance.
These search engine results
are shown in the form of links. These links point
to the website where one might find the requested
information. It is the search engines job to return
only those results that best match the search
term.

In the above diagram the links in the red boxes
are "Sponsored Links" and are paid for
by advertisers. These paid for links are part
of a pay-per-click (PPC) campaign. Each time a
visitor clicks on one of the sponsored links the
advertiser is charged for the click.
The remaining results are "Organic"
listings and are a direct result of website optimization
efforts. They cost the website owners nothing
per click but it's difficult to get to the top
of these search engines.
It is the job of these search engines to produce
relevant results for it's visitors. It does this
by ranking websites based on a calculated formula
called an algorithm. Only the best websites make
it to the top of the search engine results
pages (SERP's). The only way to make
it there is to have your website optimized.
